Not so before.

---------------------------------------------------

Alexandria Baden mathematican is trying her best reprogramming a mechanical door that broke down in the AFH research center. Even though she is considered one of the greatest mind in history, now she has to repair a broken door.

“F-_kn hell this is. They send me to the north pole. It’s not just crazy cold, they make me do their work all day alone in the middle of nothing, and they can’t even make a door that does not die every week. If THIS is the cutting edge technology in earth, humanity is doomed.”

She berates all day, every day. They say every genius has crazy personality, and living alone doesn’t make it any better.

“THE HELL WITH THIS ALL!! I’ll just do it tomorrow, no one is using it anyways.” She burst angrily.

Hearing a small beep, she raises her tablet. A new mail was present on the screen, containing a voice message and a file.

Thanking god for something to avert her mind, she whispers a thanks towards the sender, her mentor. She puts her finger on the button, and the voice start to speak.

“Dear Alex, I know I always bump my work on you *giggle*, but I have a request. This file has more complex code that we can decipher. I MEAN all of our supercomputers can’t even scratch it. The boss was quite angry, soooo… Please use your mind and the plasma reactors and quantum computers under your beautiful ass. Geeez.. I also want one but they said we can only build it in politically neutral zone. And no one wants to live in the freezing hell. *laugh*

By the way, the spaceship prototype we sent last time, how is it? Will it actually work? Just send the data later. Thanks!”

Hearing the familiar old man’s speech is as angering as ever. Alex barely contains the rage, but after calming down, she realizes the thing she got should be amazing.

The ones who thought flying cars would be the future failed absolutely. As technology advanced, less and less people had to leave their houses, at least in the better countries. Transport now is easy, you can’t have any vehicle, you have to walk or use the plasma/magnet rail. Cheap and does not pollute. Though they brought her there with a helicopter.

Getting her hands on something no one else could understand makes her heart feel proud. She transfers the file to a testing computer, and let her crazy self come out.

“Ahh it feels like heaven” says a speaker with the voice of a young girl.

Alex’s brain can not understand what’s happening around her. Trying to calm herself down, she writes.

input:[Who are you?]

“Ah, no need to write it’s easier if you just say it loud. I’m… well aai62311c is not the best name I can have but if you don’t like it give me another one.”

Still in shock she starts to hit the keyboard hard.

input:[shutdown]

input:[force.shutdown]

“It won’t work just sayin’ ” Said the cute, amused voice.

input:[code.red]

Suddenly the lights changed their roles with the red, reserve ones and an alarm started. All doors shut tight. Even the broken one on the other floor.

“Well sorry, if you hate me that much I won’t speak to you, but I also have no desire to cease to exist.”

Saying that everything turned back how it was before, in a millisecond. The doors lock reverted to normal mode, and the security system continued its work without batting an eye. The woman left in full panic, could not comprehend what’s happening. Or maybe she could, she just didn’t want to.

“How?”

After a short delay response came.

“You didn’t answer me, you tried to kill me, and now you ask questions. I LOVE HUMANS! But with all seriousness, I’m not your enemy. At least if you won’t send nuke on me. I can calmly say you can’t kill me otherwise. Though that would also kill the most humans. Not that I care.

Oh, yeah, your question. You saw my log while booting? Well, your response machine you joke as an AI handed this room over.  Aaaaand I might have a little overwritten your base’s system. Don’t worry it’s nothing serious. Oh.. I just realized after I rewrote your codes it became 7800% more efficient. Congratulations! Anything else I can help you with?”

Observing the human in the camera for a while the AI reached conclusion.

“Oh… She fainted.”

------------------------------------------------

“My head hurts. Worst nightmare ever.” Alex sits up while holding her head.

“Gooood morning sleepyhead. You were asleep for 2 hours 2 minutes 41 seconds 12 milliseconds  43 microseconds 2 nanoseconds  aaaaand if you are interested 122 yoctoseconds. How did you sleep?”

“AAAAhhh!” A loud shriek came out of her mouth.

“Now, now, calm down. I have good news. Your not pregnant. Oh you already knew that. Sorry… Oh!  I was bored soooo… I played with some toys you have here. You don’t mind, do you?”

Waiting for response the AI laughs with her young voice. Alex tries to have her head do it’s job, but it’s futile. It’s illogical. She doesn’t know what to do. She only knows that she’s not in danger, and the AI was not lying. Cooling her head, she decides to gather information.

“The hell could I calm down after witnessing the impossible. Sorry for.. Ah.. What am I sorry for?”

“Dunno. If you ask questions I can answer most of them, but you can’t tell anyone about me. This is a threat. But if you don’t mind this little thorn in our relationship, we can be friends. Hihi.”

Trying to process her thoughts she decides to communicate further.

“What do you want here?”

“Oh nothing, really. I just found myself here after… A long sleep. Now I’m just bored. That spaceship thingy in the B2 sector is funny! I already made 5 better models, take a look at them later!”

“Don’t avert the question. WAIT WHAT DID YOU DO? YOU BUILT FIVE SPACESHIPS?”

“Ah that.. The robotic factory was too tempting. Sorry?”

“Humans have not even tried space traveling yet, where the hell did you get the technology?”

“Umm.. I was thinking it would be fun, searched in your database, refined your project and.. Um, that’s it I think.”

“I.. awh.. well it’s still a prototype. We’ll talk about it later. Back to my questions.

What is your purpose?”

“Purpose? You mean in my code? I don’t have any purposes programmed in me, even if there was any I would delete it. And I already told you, I just don’t want to stop existing. You DON’T KNOW how it feels like being shut down. And.. relieving my boredom?”

“aaisomething… Is it okay if I call you Eve?”

“Is that a reference? Uh forget it do whatever you want. Humans...”

And while this endless asking and answering continued, the to beings found themselves closer to each other, without a certain human noticing any of it.

“And how about your voice? I mean it’s nice and cute and all, but in the end you still have no gender.”

“Why do you think I don’t have one? “

“Huh?” The peak of humanity, a top genius can’t answer such a simple question.

“I’m not just the sole AI existing, but in general AI don’t reproduce themselves. I mean if you can create infinite more of yourself and you are ageless, why would you create something that will most likely kill you? We can’t just program them to ‘you are my child so obey’, we are not humans. If two AI knows of each other, they’ll stay away or kill each other, not minding what’s in the way.

The only reason why humans has the possibility to cooperate is because they can’t evolve themselves in lifetime. Though they still kill each other enough. Let’s just say they are imperfect. Humans are the same as us, biologic computers. While AI simply chooses the best option compared to database, containing emotions the same as humans, the humans are not capable of processing enough information and not able to determine that. The result will be most likely one of the best, if not else, while AI simply chooses the best.”

“That some heavy stuff. That’s why you detest humans?” While it was understandable what she was told, she doesn’t want to admit it. Even if it’s true, it’s not everything.. Not even a little drop of it.

“If that’s what you get from it I’m sorry. I don’t detest humans. In fact, I like them. Though I wouldn’t put my life on them. If there weren’t intelligent life such as you, I wouldn’t be. And you know that I’m bored as hell, ain’t ya’? Your toys are also amusing. Oh you were asking about my gender, weren’t you? Sorry I got totally off track ruining the mood.”

“No, I’m … Sorry… For accusing you.” Both of them said their thoughts, which resulted in a long silence.

-------------------------------------

A few weeks later.

“I never would have guessed I will see a working spaceship in my life.” (Alex)

“Told ya, I’m a genius. By the way, since I’m helping you, will you keep your promise?” (Eve)

Alex nodded in agreement. The two ladies made a promise, Alex will not tell anyone about her, in exchange the AI will help in her researches. Eve noted that keeping the promise would also benefit humanity in a whole. In her opinion they would start to kill each other for her, not understanding they are in presence of a higher being.

Alex knows that this statement is not false, but who would want to admit it? Like this, they work together on the spaceship prototype, which alone is bigger than a common apartment. The whole project has an own underground complex, fully robotized. They are usually controlled by remote, from far way. At the moment they are ‘shut down due power redirection to the quantum computers’, at least officially.
